Reckless Truck Driving Accident Seriously Injured Local Police Officer
A California Highway Patrol officer was seriously injured in a crash involving a tractor trailer. The crash took place in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 7 on Highway 50 near 16th Street. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) officer had left his patrol car to assist vehicles involved in a separate accident when a tractor trailer slammed into his vehicle.
A CHP spokesman announced that the tractor trailer struck the officer's patrol car at nearly full speed. The officer is currently at a local hospital in serious condition, and the truck driver will now face serious criminal charges for his role in this terrible accident.
The CHP announced that the truck driver was under the influence of an illegal narcotic at the time of the crash. The CHP indicated that officers believe the drug was likely some form of illegal stimulant. This type of drug is common among big-rig drivers that are required to drive long distances with little sleep.
This type of sleep deprivation increases the risk that the truck driver will be involved in an accident caused by distracted or reckless driving. The truck driver faces charges of reckless driving causing injury as well as narcotics possession.
The Federal Motor Carrier Administration (FMCSA) imposes strict safety regulations on owners and operators of large transport trucks. When these rules and regulations are not met, it can result in serious injuries and even death. According to the FMSCA:
• 3,978 tractor trailers and other large vehicles were involved in
fatal crashes in 2014.
• The number of large trucks involved incrashes that caused serious injuries increased by 21% between 2013 and 2014.
• In 2014, 88,000 crashes involving large trucks caused at least one serious injury per accident.
