Elk Grove Resident Fatally Injured in Car Crash Was Not Wearing Seatbelt at the Time of the Accident
In May of 2015, Del Rio & Carichoff, Sacramento Car Accident and Personal Injury law firm, shared important safety information about the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Click It or Ticket" Campaign. The Click It or Ticket Campaign is an annual program aimed at raising awareness about the importance of seatbelt safety for drivers of all ages. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of wonderful safety programs such as this, far too many drivers are still failing to wear their seatbelts while riding or driving in motor vehicles.
One tragic accident involving a passenger that failed to wear their seatbelt took place over the weekend, when an Elk Grove man was fatally injured. The 23-year-old man was riding in the backseat of a car with two other people on the night of Saturday, July 18th, when the accident took place.
According to Police, the car was travelling west on Highway 50 in Sacramento, just east of Third Street, when it struck another vehicle that had broken down on the highway. The Police report stated that the accident took place around 10:30pm, which may indicate that the driver of the car was unable to see the vehicle that was disabled in the right-hand lane of Highway 50.
Unfortunately, the man in the back seat of the vehicle was not wearing his seatbelt when the accident took place. While the other drivers and passengers involved in the accident escaped with only minor injuries, the 23-year-old Elk Grove man sustained serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Incidents such as this serve as a tragic reminder that far too many drivers and passengers are injured or worse in accidents that can be prevented by following basic safety precautions. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provided the following statistics about seatbelt safety during their Click It or Ticket Campaign:
• The NHTSA estimates that between 2009 and 2013,
seatbelts saved a total of 63,000 lives.
• Young men were the group at highest risk of being fatally injured in a car accident in which they were not wearing a seatbelt. In 2013, 54% of male passenger vehicle occupants involved in fatal car accidents were no wearing their seatbelt.
• Perhaps most troubling is the fact that large numbers of young people are making the dangerous decision to drive and ride in cars without seatbelts. The Center for Disease Control polled groups of young drivers about seatbelt safety, and 45% of high school students reported that they did not always wear a seatbelt when riding with someone else.
