26-Year-Old Man Killed By Faulty, Deteriorating Staircase in Apartment Complex
A 26-year-old California man was tragically killed on Friday, July 3rd after being crushed underneath a collapsed concrete staircase. Officials say that the accident occurred at around 2:40pm Friday afternoon at The Legends at Willow Creek Apartments in Folsom, CA. Investigators are pointing to dry-rot as the likely cause of the collapse, and it appears that the managers of the apartment building were extremely negligent in their upkeep and did not repair this issue in a timely fashion.
A witness and friend of the 26-year-old victim told investigators that the two were walking down the stairs Friday afternoon when the concrete structure gave way. The concrete steps fell and struck the victim, and barely missed the witness. Perhaps the most concerning and frustrating detail of this case is that this accident was not an isolated incident.
In fact, it now appears that the building managers were aware of this potential risk for at least a year, but failed to make the necessary repairs in a timely fashion. If the building's managers had been more responsible with the upkeep of their facilities, it is possible that this young man might still be alive today.
Back in June of 2014, a similar incident took place involving collapsing concrete stairs. Fortunately, this case did not result in any injuries or fatalities, but it did bring this dangerous situation to the attention of the building's owners. After the June 2014 accident, building managers hired a firm to inspect and, if necessary, repair all 22 stairways in the apartment complex. However, according to witnesses within the apartments, only 12 out of the 22 staircases received the proper attention as of July of this year.
The other 10 staircases, one of which collapsed on Friday fatally injuring the victim, were somehow allowed to remain in use despite the fact that the building managers knew of the potential danger. It is exactly this type of negligent behavior on the part of property owners that puts residents at risk.
No one should have to live in a home where the structural integrity of the building is in question. Furthermore, when building managers fail to take the appropriate action to make the living conditions safe for all of their residents, they must be held responsible for their negligent behavior.
