Sacramento Pedestrian Seriously Injured After Being Struck by Taxi
A Sacramento pedestrian suffered serious injuries after being struck by a taxi in downtown Sacramento last week. Police say that the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital after the accident where her condition was listed as "critical."
The accident took place at around 4:30pm near the intersection 5th and P streets in downtown Sacramento. According to police, the pedestrian was crossing the street when she was struck by a taxi driver that failed to stop in time. The investigation into this accident is ongoing, and no charges have been filed against the driver at this time. It is also unclear at this point whether or not the pedestrian was using a designated crosswalk when she was struck.
Pedestrian accidents are often preventable and pose a serious health hazard for California residents. Unfortunately, data collected by the Governors Highway Safety Association found that California had the highest number of pedestrian fatalities out of any state in the country in both 2014 and 2013.
• Approximately 700 pedestrians were fatally injured in motor vehicle accidents in California in 2014, and 701 pedestrians lost their lives in 2013.
Drivers have a responsibility to be mindful of pedestrians on the road at all times. However, pedestrians should also take several important steps to protect their own safety, including:
use a designated crosswalk when crossing the street.
• When crossing a busy road or intersection, never cross against a traffic signal. Always wait for the light to turn green in your direction before crossing.
• When out walking, running or biking after dark or at twilight, wear bright, reflective clothing. This helps make you more visible to drivers and reduces your risk of being involved in an accident.
• Walk on run on the sidewalk whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk available, walk on the shoulder of the road facing traffic.
