Work Zones on California Highways Create Dangerous Conditions for Both Drivers and Construction Workers
For drivers that commute every day in California, it can be difficult to ignore the many work zones and construction sites along our state’s highways. Unfortunately, far too many preventable traffic accidents occur at active work zones in California every year, and the results can be devastating.
Just this week, a construction worker and a driver were both seriously injured following a traffic collision at a work zone on Interstate 80. The accident occurred at around 4:30am on I-80 near West El Camino Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Here are some statistics that show just how dangerous work zones can be for both drivers and construction workers:
• In California in 2014,
63 people were fatally injured in work zone traffic accidents according to the Transportation Development Foundation.
•California had the second largest number of work zone traffic fatalities of any state in the country in 2014.
• There were a total of 669 fatalities at work zones throughout the United States that were caused by traffic accidents in 2014.
Here are some safety tips we hope will be helpful for drivers to help reduce the number of work zone traffic accidents:
•Look for posted signs: While driving, be alert for signs that instruct motorists that they are
approaching a work zone. Follow the posted instructions, whether that
means merging into a different lane or reducing speed.
•Slow down: Posted speed limits are reduced when entering a work zone. Additionally, the fines and penalties for speeding may increase when driving through a work zone.
•Don’t tailgate: No driver enjoys the heavy traffic that can result when hundreds of drivers are forced to merge simultaneously. However, the safest course of action is to remain patient and avoid tailgating fellow motorists.
When approaching a work zone, be safe and be aware.
