Drunk Driver in Auburn Causes Two Pedestrian Deaths
A tragic and preventable pedestrian accident caused by a drunk driver resulted in the deaths of two young children this past weekend. When innocent pedestrians or drivers are seriously injured, or even killed, by a motorist that made the decision to drive drunk, it is a reminder that much more must be done in order to put an end to this dangerous and criminal behavior.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening at the intersection of Highway 49 & Shale Ridge Road in Auburn. On Sunday, 4/3, a group of three young boys between the ages of 12 and 14 were walking along the shoulder of Highway 49. The boys were following all of the proper safety precautions for pedestrians, staying on the shoulder of the road and away from passing traffic.
At approximately 5:15 pm, a drunk driver in a pickup truck swerved out of his lane and struck the group of pedestrians. Two of the boys were fatally injured, while a third managed to escape unharmed. The driver that caused the accident had been driving erratically, and hit at least one other parked car before causing the fatal accident.
The driver that caused the accident was arrested and faces 2 charges of vehicular manslaughter, along with one count of driving under the influence.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, alcohol was involved in 49% of fatal pedestrian accidents in 2013. At Del Rio & Carichoff, Sacramento Wrongful Death Attorneys, we want to share important information that can help Sacramento residents try to avoid these tragic and preventable accidents.
Here are some important safety tips for pedestrians to keep in mind:
• Be Especially Cautious At Night: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
therate of alcohol impairment in fatal car accidents was almost four times
greater at night than during the day. Avoid walking or running late at
night whenever possible, especially on rural roads and highways.
• Make Yourself Clearly Visible: If you plan to walk along a busy road or highway, make yourself clearly visible to other drivers. Avoid dark clothing, as it can make it difficult for drivers to recognize that you are a pedestrian from a distance. Adding a moment or two of time for a driver to react can make all the difference.
• Report Suspicious Driver Behavior: If you notice another motorist swerving, drifting out of their lane, ignoring posted traffic signals, or otherwise driving erratically, call the police right away. If you can provide the make, model or license plate of the car, the police may be able to get the driver off of the road and prevent a dangerous traffic accident.
