California Highway Patrol Warns of Spike in Drunk Driving Accidents Involving Wrong-Way Drivers
Paying close attention to your surroundings and following the flow of traffic is the first and most basic rule of driver safety. However, when a driver gets behind the wheel after consuming alcohol, even the most simple and common sense practices are often disregarded.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is warning Sacramento area motorists that during the summer months of 2015, officers have observed a dramatic increase in accidents involving intoxicated motorists driving in the wrong direction on busy roads and highways.
One of these accidents took place last Friday night, when a drunk driver entered Business 80 traveling south in a northbound lane of traffic. The intoxicated driver continued down the interstate for several miles in the wrong direction, before swerving around a Police car and colliding head-on with a tractor trailer. Both drivers involved in this accident were lucky to escape with only minor injuries, but several other recent accidents in Sacramento involving drunk drivers heading in the wrong direction have had much more tragic consequences.
In early May, four people were fatally injured by a drunk driver going the wrong way on Interstate 505 in Yolo County. In this case, the driver was traveling south in a northbound lane at over 85 miles an hour. This driver also narrowly avoided hitting a CHP patrol vehicle before colliding with another car heading in the opposite direction. Tragically, the drunk driver as well as 3 out of the 4 passengers in other vehicle, which included a mother and her teenage daughters, were fatally injured at the scene.
An intoxicated motorist driving against the flow of traffic may seem like a rare and bizarre occurrence, but in fact these types of accidents happen with a disturbing amount of regularity. Here are some statistics that illustrate the extent of the problem:
• The CHP reports that the number of
motorists either killed or injured by wrong-way drivers has increased every year since 2011.
• In California alone, 61 people were killed and another 861 were injured in accidents involving wrong-way drivers in 2014.
• Wrong-way drivers have already killed more than 12 people in California in 2015.
These accidents are just one aspect of the disturbing and outrageous behavior that motorists exhibit when driving under the influence of alcohol. Drunk driving leads to reckless, irresponsible and negligent behavior and must be avoided at all costs. The consequences of drunk driving are severe for victims and families, and the penalties are harsh for those guilty of this selfish and inexcusable crime.
According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) drunk driving fatalities represented almost 30% of total traffic deaths in California in 2014. This rate represents nearly a 5% increase from the previous year. As Californians, we must do all we can to help spread awareness and cut down on these tragic and preventable accidents.
