FDA Issues Recall of California Pasta Salad Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination at Local Farm
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced last week that Schnuck Markets will be issuing a voluntary recall of all Chef's Express California Pasta salad due to a possible Salmonella contamination. The company is targeting all California Pasta Salad products sold between April 2nd and April 14th, 2015 and is urging customers to dispose of any containers of the product that may have been purchased during this time period.
The recall began as a result of salmonella contamination that was first discovered at Taylor Farms, a Salinas, California manufacturer. The spinach grown and packaged at the Salinas, CA plant was used to make the Schnuck Markets California Pasta Salad prior to the discovery of Salmonella in their facilities. California residents that purchase Taylor Farms spinach or other products are also urged to dispose of any possibly contaminated food purchased since the beginning of April.
According to the Center for Disease Control, the Salmonella bacteria causes approximately one million illnesses and 380 deaths in the United States every year. Salmonella can survive in a variety of food products and must be handled with extreme caution when a possible outbreak is detected. Salmonella poisoning is rarely fatal, however cases of death have been recorded in patients with weakened or compromised immune systems, including small children and elderly adults.
In healthy individuals, Salmonella poisoning can cause the following symptoms:
• Severe abdominal pain
In a majority of cases, symptoms last for a period of 4 to 7 days and patients often recover without medical treatment. However, more severe cases of Salmonella exposure can lead to:
• Contamination of the bloodstream
• Arterial infections
Thus far, no illnesses linked to this particular contamination have been reported.
