Ford Auto Manufacturers Announce Recall of Over 200,000 Vehicles
Recently Ford announced 5 separate product recalls that apply to more than 202,000 vehicles in the U.S and Canada. The problems surrounding the recalls are serious and include issues with gas lines, air bag sensors, engine blocks and steering columns in several Ford models. The recall announcement appears to be a preliminary step, as Ford announced that the issues in question have caused only one accident and no injuries to this point.
The largest recall will impact roughly 135,000 Ford F-150 pickup trucks and Ford Flex sport utility vehicles that were found to have issues with passenger seat weight sensors. These sensors affect the way that the vehicle's airbags are deployed during a crash and are critical to maintaining passenger safety. The other major recalls will affect:
- 38,600 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars manufactured between 2005 and 2011. Reason for the recall: correcting instances where steering shafts separate, causing a loss of control over the vehicle.
- 27,600 Transit Connect Commercial Vans manufactured in 2014. Reason for the recall: potential leaks in the fuel lines of vehicles with 2.5-liter engines.
- 90 2015-model Transit vans. Reason for the recall: a bolt securing the diesel fuel filter to the vehicle frame can become detached causing the engine to stall.
- 960 F-150 pickups manufactured in 2014. Reason for the recall: a malfunctioning switch attached to the brake pedal may cause a delay in illuminating brake lights and difficulty switching out of cruise control.
Automotive recalls are causing devastating and life threatening injuries for drivers. One of the most dangerous recall cases began earlier this year, when General Motors announced major problems with the ignition switches in nearly 25 million cars sold within the United States.
Congress is investigating this recall, and it looks like General Motor's executives had full knowledge of this deadly error, but failed to notify anyone of the risks. This product defect, which causes car engines to shut off during driving and prevents air bags from deploying, has already yielded nearly 200 claims of death and thousands more of serious injury which are now under investigation.
This GM case is an unfortunate reminder that large companies often do not work in the best interest of their customers, opting instead to cut corners to save time and money.
